Detective James "Sonny" Crockett and detective Ricardo "Rico" Tubbs, of the Miami-Dade police department's organized crime bureau vice unit, work deep undercover as seedy criminals to infiltrate and bring down the various criminal enterprises of southern Florida.
Stubble-faced detective Crockett lived in a sailboat guarded by his alligator Elvis. His partner Tubbs was a black New York cop looking for his brother's killer. Together they took on the Florida drug world. The show influenced men's fashions toward Italo-casual and interior decor toward the Miami look. Very trendy music and unusual guest performers.
I didn't catch "Miami Vice" when it originally aired (too young) but when I did, it was when I could appreciate its cultural impact. This *was* the '80s, or at least the MTV version of it; and that's exactly why I fell so hard for this show. For one thing, it created a sense of mood like nobody's business. No matter what Crockett and Tubbs were investigating, there as always a music video to capture the state mind. But there was substance to back up the style; this show covered some heavy stuff. And production values to match; even on the TV screen, this feels more cinematic than its contemporaries.
For years, I'd heard of "Miami Vice" as a zeitgeist-capturing beast rich in cop-show angst and flashy style; but in the end, it's a thoroughly entertaining plunge into the lives of two undercover cowboys and their vibrant surroundings. And you can't beat that soundtrack.
My favorite TV show for very good reason. All I need is to hear a piece of Jan Hammer synth and I'm right back there on the gold coast.
10/10 What a superb series Miami Vice was. I recently caught a few episodes on DVD and I don't think they look dated at all.
Don Johnson played Detective Sonny Crockett and Philip Michael Thomas played Ricardo Tubbs. They were vice cops working in Miami, which has a sleazy reputation in TV land. The two detectives must have been on a good salary to wear the clothes they did and driving around in a Ferrari. The two stars exuded charisma and machismo. Don't know what was the deal about Crockett and his phobia of socks though.
The show had a cool opening tune, plenty of car chases, a bit of detective work and plenty of shooting. Johnson and Michael Thomas seemed to have a huge amount of chemistry on the show.
The plots were relatively simple as Crockett and Tubbs went up against the usual sleaze found in TV land Miami. The show was consistently good throughout. I can still hear the thumping opening music in my head now.
Pure 80's entertainment. episode, The Golden Triangle, Castillo tells Tubbs how he once was stationed in the mountain range in between Burma (now Myanmar) and Thailand for three years. Tubbs says, "three years, that's a long time." To which his boss replies, "its a lifetime." And in the season 3 episode, The Savage , there's a detailed flashback to Castillo's past as an agent once stationed in southeast Asia during the Vietnam war in the early 1970's. He was investigating the murders of several local prostitutes with the help of a local police investigator name of Tran. Who came to Miami in the present searching for the same serial killer from the past. It seems that Martin Castillo certainly has had a ton of on the job experience as both an investigator and drug enforcement agent. He's an old school by the book cop who's been there, done that. No, in fact in 1984 prior to casting the pivotal roles of Crockett and Tubbs then NBC entertainment chief a5c7b9f00b
